God Has a Name: Introduction

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;

William Shakespeare

My name, Sandy, is a nickname. Literally, my nickname means covered in sand. My given name is Sandra. Looking up my name would lead to Alexandra, which then leads to Alexander. Alexander means defender of man. My middle name, Fay, is a whole ‘nother story. Fay means fairy. Not something I aspire to.

I don’t imagine my mother picked my name for its meaning, though some mothers do. God doesn’t have random, thoughtless names, and we don’t assign God names to fit our concept of who we want him to be. He reveals his character, his nature, through the names he reveals to us. They are an invitation to know him and be in relationship with him.

Over the next series of posts, I want to explore a few of God’s names as he introduces himself. There are many books written on the Names of God. Books worthy of study. My posts will be selective and short. Offering just a taste to inspire your craving to know him more.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

Psalm 34:8 (ESV)

Grace & Peace,

Sandy
