For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!

Romans‬ ‭10‬:‭13‬-‭15‬ ‭NLT

I want to delve into this scripture today for my own benefit. My Bible Study Teacher asked if I would like to teach on a book of the Bible and I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Partly because I wanted to share in a way I learn, and partly because I wasn’t seeing eye to eye with the current interim teacher.

There are many excellent portions in this scripture, but I want to examine being sent and who is the one doing the sending. For “how will anyone go and tell them without being sent?”

We can rewind to the Gospel of John to see this concept through Jesus life.

…For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me.

John‬ ‭5‬:‭36‬-‭37‬ ‭ESV

Jesus doesn’t arrive on earth willy-nilly. Father God sent him for a reason, to fulfill a purpose. We’ll look at purpose a little later, but who else was sent?

These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

John‬ ‭14‬:‭24‬-‭26‬ ‭ESV

Here we have the promise that when Jesus returns to the Father the Holy Spirit will be sent to us. He instructs the disciples further before his ascension—

…Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭1‬:‭4‬-‭5‬, ‭8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

And lastly, Jesus sends us.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew‬ ‭28‬:‭18‬-‭20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

And what of our purpose in being sent? From what I can see it all leads back to the scripture from Romans—“But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?”

The Father sent Jesus and the Holy Spirit to us. We in turn, are sent by and with Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to be messengers who bring good news to the ends of the earth. So maybe teaching a Bible Study is in the realm of God’s purpose for me. As long as I acknowledge who my sender is.

Grace & Peace,

Sandy
