When Doing What You Want Doesn’t Get You What You Want

I’m having a bit of a crisis today. I’m realizing I would rather do what I want — read, drink tea, and eat chocolate — than do the things that will get me what I want. There are times when I kick myself into gear, but the strong desire to do things that are pleasing and take little effort sing to me like a siren’s song.

Do not love [excessive] sleep, or you will become poor; Open your eyes [so that you can do your work] and you will be satisfied with bread.
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭20‬:‭13‬ ‭AMP‬‬

I have trouble imagining my life doing all the hard things or all the necessary things without feeling overwhelmed by the mountain of decisions necessary to arrive at the place called What I Truly Want. And what do I do when I feel overwhelmed? You’ve guessed it. I read, drink tea, and eat chocolate.

For the ambivalent person believes one minute and doubts the next. Being undecided makes you become like the rough seas driven and tossed by the wind. You’re up one minute and tossed down the next. When you are half-hearted and wavering it leaves you unstable. Can you really expect to receive anything from the Lord when you’re in that condition?
‭‭James (Jacob)‬ ‭1‬:‭6b‬-‭8‬ ‭TPT‬‬

Oh what a mess! Or a better word – a conundrum (a confusing and difficult problem or question.) Is there a solution? Of course. But just because there is, doesn’t mean it’s easy.

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭6‬:‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I have to choose the next right thing every day, over and over again. It’s called discipline. Discipline may seem like the longer harder route, but it is the surest way to get there.

For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭4‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Does this mean I can never do what I want? No. It means I need to ask myself each time, “What do I truly want and how can I make that happen?” (This would be a good place to stop and define those things, and make sure God and I are on the same page.)

If I only do the things I want in the short-term, I’ll never reach those things I want in the long-term, those lasting things of value.

Grace & Peace,

Sandy
