Making Room for the Holy Spirit

Make Room is the second song on my playlist for 2025. I shared the first song, Made for More in my post about my word for 2025 – MORE. The thread that connects these two songs is a desire for God to be more present in my life. The lyrics, “I will make room for you, to do whatever you want to,” is my surrender anthem. What “more” I could accomplish on my own would just be more of the same — disappointing and overwhelming — usually ending in self-abusive inner-dialogue. So how do I get onboard with God and His plans? Cue the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?”

But we have the mind of Christ.
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭2‬:‭10b‬-‭16‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God and the Spirit from God who dwells in the believer. This same Spirit is in Jesus, and why scripture tells us we have the mind of Christ. We can understand and discern God’s thoughts because of the Holy Spirit.

Look at this next scripture.

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself.
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭19‬ ‭NLT‬‬

What did I notice? Not the part we sing about, “my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit,” but The Holy Spirit lives in my physical body. He resides in me, while also residing in others. Mind blown! This gives Jesus’ words about abiding in Him greater clarity.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
‭‭John‬ ‭15‬:‭4‬-‭5‬ ‭ESV‬‬

(I hadn’t thought of this verse until I began writing. I find myself amazed every time a revelation appears as I explore the scriptures.)

Having the Holy Spirit residing in us doesn’t mean we lose our ability to choose. We can in fact grieve the Holy Spirit by making choices that are contrary to His nature.

And never let ugly or hateful words come from your mouth, but instead let your words become beautiful gifts that encourage others; do this by speaking words of grace to help them.

The Holy Spirit of God has sealed you in Jesus Christ until you experience your full salvation. So never grieve the Spirit of God or take for granted his holy influence in your life.
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭29‬-‭30‬ ‭TPT‬‬

There is a battle being waged inside of us. These scriptures have called one side, the spirit of the world or the sinful self. We can choose to follow our own desires or the way of the Spirit. God has given us free will.

So I tell you, live the way the Spirit leads you. Then you will not do the evil things your sinful self wants. The sinful self wants what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit wants what is against the sinful self. They are always fighting against each other, so that you don’t do what you really want to do.
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭ERV‬‬

Following the Spirit is like turning on a light switch in a room, revealing the clutter that needs to be cleared out so we can move on to the next. And when the clutter is all gone it’s time for a dance party! Lol! That’s my thought, anyway.

As I go through this year of MORE I pray you, too, will make room for your own party with God. May His light shine in every room of your house.

Grace & Peace,

Sandy
