Let Them Hear

There are plenty of books and teachings on how to hear God. I may have written a blog or two about this subject, but I find myself being directed this way again. The title is taken from the following verse.

Whoever has ears, let them hear.

Matthew 11:15 NIV

And the picture? I was looking up whisper and several pictures of floating dandelion seeds came up and it dawned on me that their seeds are sometimes called whispers. So let’s look at how sometime God whispers.

And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”‬‬

1 Kings‬ ‭19‬:‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭NLT

And I imagine this next one as a whisper in my ear.

Even though the Lord may allow you to go through a season of hardship and difficulty, he himself will be there with you. He will not hide himself from you, for your eyes will constantly see him as your Teacher. When you turn to the right or turn to the left, you will hear his voice behind you to guide you, saying, “This is the right path; follow it.”‬‬

Isaiah‬ ‭30‬:‭20‬-‭21‬ ‭TPT

Could this be where we get the idea of an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other? But I digress.

I’ve never heard God’s audible voice, but does that mean I’ve never heard him? Pshh! That’s ridiculous to think God can’t “speak” to someone unless he speaks out loud.

For instance: nature, God’s creation speaks to us.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.‬‬

Psalm‬ ‭19‬:‭1‬-‭4a‬ ‭ESV

When we listen to the voice of creation we get to know God.

For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.‬‬

Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭20‬ ‭NLT

There are more ways God speaks: teachers, mentors, and counselors.

And teach them to faithfully follow all that I have commanded you. And never forget that I am with you every day, even to the completion of this age.‬‬

Matthew‬ ‭28‬:‭20‬ ‭TPT

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.‬‬

Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬ ‭ESV

(I backtracked to point out one of my favorite ways to hear God is through songs.)

Without consultation and wise advice, plans are frustrated, But with many counselors they are established and succeed.‬‬

Proverbs‬ ‭15‬:‭22‬ ‭AMP

There is nothing wrong with hearing God through seasoned Christians. We only need to align their teaching or advice with the Word. And that brings us to hearing God through the Bible.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.‬‬

2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬ ‭NLT

Reading the Bible is not an exercise in futility, it shapes us and guides us.

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.‬‬

Psalms‬ ‭119‬:‭11‬ ‭NLT

And once that word is in our heart a timely nudge from the Holy Spirit can speak it into our present circumstance.

But when the Father sends the Spirit of Holiness, the One like me who sets you free, he will teach you all things in my name. And he will inspire you to remember every word that I’ve told you.‬‬

John‬ ‭14‬:‭26‬ ‭TPT

Another way the Holy Spirit speaks to us is through dreams and visions.

This is what I will do in the last days —I will pour out my Spirit on everybody and cause your sons and daughters to prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will experience dreams from God.‬‬

Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭17‬ ‭TPT

You may say you can’t hear God, but I don’t believe it. You may not hear him the same way as someone you deem more spiritual than you are, but I believe God speaks to all of us. And as we listen more consciously, we hear better.

So my advice on how to hear God?

Here’s what I’m saying: Ask and you’ll get; Seek and you’ll find; Knock and the door will open.‬‬

Luke‬ ‭11‬:‭9‬ ‭MSG

The Amplified says it this way:

So I say to you, ask and keep on asking, and it will be given to you; seek and keep on seeking, and you will find; knock and keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. [Matt 7:7-11] For everyone who keeps on asking [persistently], receives; and he who keeps on seeking [persistently], finds; and to him who keeps on knocking [persistently], the door will be opened.
‭‭Luke‬ ‭11‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭AMP‬‬

So don’t think you’ll miss out if you don’t hear an audible voice in your ear. Expect God to speak in any one of these ways scripture shows us.

I pray you will find his voice today.

Grace & Peace,

Sandy
