Have you ever had one of those moments of awe? A moment when you are amazed by the power of God expressed in creation? That happened to me, as I thought about what makes a day.
We all know there are 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year plus one every 4 years. And you may know how that gets counted but let me go over some facts.
There are two ways we measure time, one is Earth’s rotation and the other is its revolution. Earth completes a full spin in relation to the sun every 24 hours. Consistently. Every day. And Earth travels around the sun every 365.242 days. How can these systems work so precisely that we can set our watches accurately with everyone on the planet? It boggles my mind.
And then we have the tilt of Earth’s axis that gives us our seasons, and the effect of the moon and sun’s gravitational pull creates our tides. I learned something about the moon while looking things up. Did you know we always see the same side of the moon? It is synchronized in its orbit with Earth. There is so much to learn scientifically about our solar system, it is awe inspiring. But let’s look at scripture and see what we can learn from its inspiration.
Then God said, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years.”
Genesis 1:14 NLT
Right from the get go God informs us that the sun and the moon will track time for us. But that’s not all, they also give us a glimpse of his glory.
The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And the expanse [of heaven] is declaring the work of His hands. [Rom 1:20, 21] Day after day pours forth speech, And night after night reveals knowledge.
Psalms 19:1-2 AMP
Every day, as we watch the sunrise and the sunset, we are witness to the miracle of God’s creation.
Time for us flows differently than it does for God.
But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
2 Peter 3:8 NIV
God has plans, and he makes time for those plans.
For everything there is a season, a right time for every intention under heaven —
He has made everything suited to its time; also, he has given human beings an awareness of eternity; but in such a way that they can’t fully comprehend, from beginning to end, the things God does.
So I concluded that there is nothing better for a person to do than take joy in his activities, that that is his allotted portion; for who can enable him to see what will happen after him?
Kohelet (Ecc) 3:1, 11, 22 CJB
Time for us is fleeting, and so God gives us exhortations to use our time wisely.
Now, since we are God’s coworkers, we beg you not to take God’s marvelous grace for granted, allowing it to have no effect on your lives. For he says, “I listened to you at the time of my favor. And the day when you needed salvation, I came to your aid.” So can’t you see? Now is the time to respond to his favor! Now is the day of salvation!
2 Corinthians 6:1-2 TPT
Our salvation is God’s top priority, both for ourselves and for others.
Time is a gift, and understanding its value leads to wisdom.
So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12 ESV
We sang the hymn, How Great Thou Art at church on Sunday. The words are fitting.
Oh Lord, my God
When I, in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayedThen sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
I pray that every time you discover something amazing about God’s creation, that your heart will swell with awe at what a creative, powerful, loving God is waiting to share time with you.
Grace & Peace,
Sandy
