Have you ever stood in worship and felt awe in the presence of God? That’s what I felt this week. Imagine, if you will, the church newly decorated for Christmas—the tree, the lighted garland, the nativity—the worship team leads the congregation in songs about Jesus birth, and the pastor gives an invitation to share in communion. Then the final song with hands raised and eyes closed, Holy Forever. What a beautiful moment.

Awe is a funny thing. It’s not something you can plan for. It is surprise and magnificence and beauty. It catches your breath and warms your heart. And while nature can inspire awe, isn’t that because nature is a glimpse of God’s glory?

The Christmas season should inspire awe when we consider all God has done for us through Jesus.

Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!‬‬

Psalms‬ ‭103‬:‭1‬-‭5‬ ‭NLT

Awe clears our vision from a helpless baby in a manger to a true glimpse of who Jesus is.

And instantly I was in the Spirit, and I saw a throne in heaven and someone sitting on it. The one sitting on the throne was as brilliant as gemstones—like jasper and carnelian. And the glow of an emerald circled his throne like a rainbow…

In front of the throne was a shiny sea of glass, sparkling like crystal.

In the center and around the throne were four living beings, each covered with eyes, front and back… Each of these living beings had six wings, and their wings were covered all over with eyes, inside and out. Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty— the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.”
