Sometimes God gives me pictures and phrases like this to drive home a point. If you read last weeks post, Obsessing, you know I’ve been having trouble quieting my mind. This is more of that.
As a Christian, I know the importance of not holding things so closely. I know to trust and have faith. But walking it out is not always easy. I take control, then remember to put it down. I pick up my dreams, my plans, my fears—carry them until I’m tired, stressed and overwhelmed— then drop them at Jesus feet when I can no longer carry them. Can you feel me?
I’m reading through a Bible plan that starts by encouraging us to remember what God has done. And I’ll add, what God has said. So let’s look at some scriptures. To be honest I can only think of scriptures I’ve already shared, but look what I found.
The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with reckless confidence.
Proverbs 14:16 NLT
Do you know what happens when you jump ahead of God? You make mistakes and have to backpedal to try to get things right, only to come to the realization that there is no going backwards, and you learn that you really need God. You’ve heard the terms—face-plant, or belly-flop? That’s what I imagine.
So what is it like following your own way?
You can be certain that in the last days there will be some very hard times. People will love only themselves and money. They will be proud, stuck-up, rude, and disobedient to their parents. They will also be ungrateful, godless, heartless, and hateful. Their words will be cruel, and they will have no self-control or pity. These people will hate everything good. They will be sneaky, reckless, and puffed up with pride. Instead of loving God, they will love pleasure. Even though they will make a show of being religious, their religion won’t be real. Don’t have anything to do with such people.
2 Timothy 3:1-5 CEV
Yuck! I don’t want to be like that. Better to stick with God.
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.
Psalms 32:8-9 NIV
It’s good to know God is on our side, wanting to help us on the road.
So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him make himself scarce. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.
James 4:7-10 MSG
Did I tell you, I woke up at 4:00 this morning? I pray, in spite of my befuddled mind, that the Holy Spirit will bring something out of this post to encourage you to turn to him in everything you do.
Grace & Peace,
Sandy
