Living Sent

My last post was Sent, where I looked at who was sent and who did the sending. I wasn’t expecting a part two, but God had other plans. As I waited for today’s inspiration, this song came on the radio: CAIN – The Commission.

When my niece posted on Facebook this morning, that my ex-sister-in-law had died, and I couldn’t attest to her eternal destination, my heart was heavy. The same was not true—as preparations are finalizing this week for a celebration of life—for my friend’s husband. Even in his dementia he would declare, “Jesus, the same yesterday, today, and forever.” We still grieve, but with peace of knowing he is home.

When I think about the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) I know that sharing Christ is important. But I’ll be honest, I cringe. I don’t envision myself as an evangelist and the thought of leading someone in a sinner’s prayer has me pleading with God to let someone else do it. So will I be judged a failure? Thankfully I think God has other ways for people like me to share the Good News. Case in point: this blog. But let’s go over some scriptures.

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭6‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Acknowledge him. The Amplified Bible says: know and acknowledge and recognize Him. This is more than just telling people I believe in God. This is a recommendation to know him deeply, to give him credit, and open my eyes to his working in my life.

Next.

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

1 Peter‬ ‭3‬:‭15‬ ‭NIV

This is not an easy task. How do you approach the topic of faith without sounding judgmental or self-righteous? My first aha moment in this verse: “everyone who asks.” I don’t have to push my religion on anyone. My focus is to know God, and acknowledge I’m saved by grace. Recognizing that if it’s God’s work in my own life that saves me, it is God’s work in others’ lives that will save them. It isn’t my responsibility, but my privilege to witness and participate in some small way.

One more note on this scripture, we give our answer gently, with respect.

The next nudged phrase is the salutation often used in the epistles.

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬ ‭NLT

I’ve written on this before, about why I close with grace and peace. I want to bring it up here as a reminder. When Paul wrote his letters to the churches—to correct or instruct them—he extended to them what God had extended to him: grace and peace. This is the mindset I want to have whenever I share my hope, my story.

¶How delightful on the mountains

Are the feet of one who brings good news,

Who announces peace

And brings good news of happiness,

Who announces salvation,

And says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

Isaiah‬ ‭52‬:‭7‬ ‭NASB2020‬‬

When I share my beliefs, am I passing judgement? No, I’m sharing good news and it is a beautiful thing!

What is the best witness I can give? To live from glory to glory, closer and closer to God, and never allow fear to prevent me from sharing my faith.

Grace & Peace,

Sandy
