Me, a Conqueror?

This picture is the complete opposite of me. She is fierce and strong. While I am squishy and full of fear of failure. Yet, look at what this scripture details:

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭31‬-‭39‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Scripture says I’m not only a conqueror, I’m more than a conqueror! So, how do I wrap my head around this truth when I feel more like a mouse than a lion? Before I move on to the next scripture, look at the list of what other truths are here. 1) God, who is for us, is greater than anyone who comes against us. 2) God willing gives us all things. 3) We are not condemned, we are justified. 4) Jesus intercedes for us. 5) There is a whole list of powers and stuff that could try to separate us from God’s love, but it won’t work.

Are there things I can do to be more conquer-y? Why, yes! Let’s look.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭10‬-‭18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

There is so much here, I’ll break it down. First and foundational—“be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” I am strong in His strength. There are many scriptures referring to being “in Christ” and reminders that it is not my effort that’s important. The next item on my list is that God provides a whole set of armor, and the list of adversaries appears again.

The pieces of armor are used metaphorically to show us how to stand in battle. Here is the list without the metaphor: truth, righteousness, the gospel (good news) of peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God with praying in the Spirit.

If I find myself under attack or falling down in battle, this is a good list to go through to find the chinks in my armor. Where am I needing to retreat, refocus, reaffirm, or regroup? While remembering each piece of armor is willingly provided by God.

There are many more scriptures to help us in our conquests, here are two bonus passages.

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬-‭8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.
‭‭James‬ ‭1‬:‭2‬-‭4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

So, take heart my fellow conquerors, regardless of the battle you’re in, there is hope to be found “in Christ” for you. And me.

Grace & Peace,

Sandy
