I get excited when the sermon on Sunday opens my eyes in a new way. That’s what I want to share with you—my excitement about who Jesus is.
Pastor Seth used the word representative to describe Jesus and I want to dive into two ways this can be understood.
- Jesus as a representative of God.
- Jesus as a representative of mankind.
Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”
John 14:9 NIV
To me, Jesus statement to Philip was his way of explaining the purpose of Jesus’ human form. In a sense Jesus was saying, “What you see may be a man, but who I am is God the Father.” Jesus, as a man, came to mankind to reveal who God is in a way we can understand. He represents God to man as Jesus.
“O righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.”
John 17:25-26 NLT
So while Jesus was on earth he was revealing God in a way humanity had not seen him—as a father.
And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”
Galatians 4:6 NKJV
And when he had completed his time given to represent God to mankind, he took on himself in his human form, the penalty for our sins—death on the cross.
God made this sinless man be a sin offering on our behalf, so that in union with him we might fully share in God’s righteousness.
2 Corinthians (2 Co) 5:21 CJB
Jesus represented us in death, and continues to represent us before the Father.
So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Hebrews 4:14-16 NLT
Do you see? He represents us before the Father as one who knows what being human means. And there’s more I understood. The name.
Names are a human thing. It all started back with Adam.
Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
Genesis 2:19 NIV
Names are representatives of something or someone. So when Jesus said we could ask in his name, we are asking him to be our representative.
“For I will do whatever you ask me to do when you ask me in my name. And that is how the Son will show what the Father is really like and bring glory to him.”
John 14:13 TPT
That’s what makes this next scripture so amazing. Mankind cannot name anything higher than the name Father God gave to Jesus.
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
Philippians 2:9 ESV
When we pray in Jesus name, we are declaring Jesus represents God to us, and Jesus represents us to God. I’m sorry if I’ve confused you, but this was such a tangible concept for me.
Know this, that when you pray believing Jesus represents you, there is power in his name.
Grace & Peace,
Sandy
On a side note, I should be getting my novel proof today, which has me really excited. If you find any mistakes here it’s because I had so much on my mind I accidentally wrote this on my other site and had to cut and paste each block separately.
