Making Memories in the Rain

I bet you have a memory or two of a rainy day. Times when you really hoped for sunshine, but what you got were torrents of rain and blusters of wind. I can think of a few of my own memories — the Columbus Day Storm, camping at Detroit Lake, walking to elementary school through the muddy farmer’s field, marching in the Junior Rose Festival Parade in junior high. Each one spoiled by rain, yet it was the rain that made those days memorable.

Today was like that. Our chorus was scheduled to sing at the Fleet of Flowers Memorial Day Celebration. Yesterday’s weather was warm and sunny, but the forecast predicted an eighty percent chance of rain. We crossed our fingers as the morning brought only a light drizzle, but just as the program began so did the rain. We huddled under the canopy behind the stage waiting for our time to perform. The Girl Scout Troupe crammed in alongside us. The wind picked up causing the rain collected on top of the the canopy to form instant waterfalls. A few of the young girls squealed as they found themselves getting drenched under the flow. By the end of the program, even with the canopy, we were all cold and soaked.

At that point most of the chorus headed home, but some of us suffered our wet clothes and ate lunch together at a local restaurant. Now, at the end of the day, I’m thinking this will be a day to remember, spent with my chorus friends who I tremendously enjoy. Thank you ladies, for the memory.

Grace & Peace,

Sandy

  1. What a beautiful reflection, Sandy. It’s amazing how the days that don’t go as planned often become the memories we treasure most. Even through the rain, cold, and soaked clothes, you found joy in friendship and fellowship, and that shines through so clearly in your writing. Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt reminder that even stormy days can hold special blessings. Grace & peace to you!
