When I talk to friends and family about the changes I’ve made to my diet, they commonly reply, “I could never give up (insert favorite food here!)” And for most people the fear of having to give up the things they love, outweighs their desire to get healthier; until it doesn’t. So for those of you who are tipping over to the “desire to get healthier” side, I’ve put together four simple steps to help you get on your way without too much fear involved.
- Chew your food well. Slowing down and chewing well will accomplish several things: your saliva begins the digestion process along with the chewing breaking down your food into smaller bits, ergo more easily digestible. You will not be swallowing as much air with your food, making your stomach more comfortable. Plus you will begin savoring your food more as you take things slower.
- Skip the box. Even if you can’t afford organic produce or pastured/grass-fed meats or eggs, you can eliminate many artificial preservatives and additives by making your meals from scratch. Although it may take a few more minutes you’ll find the food tastes better and you will feel better eating it, emotionally and physically.
- To bed by 10:00, asleep by 11:00. Personally, I struggle with this one, but when I follow it I sleep better, I usually will sleep a full eight hours, and I will wake up feeling rested. This is a good topic to research if you want to know the why’s. But for my purpose here, it is a simple step that you can benefit from without too much sacrifice.
- Take a break. Find ways to nurture your relationship with God. He cares for us more than we care for ourselves. He is our biggest advocate and is more than willing to guide us in our health journey all the while keeping us balanced.
Is this doable? Which of these steps poses the most challenge for you? Have you had success with any one of these? Are you ready to begin? Share your thoughts in the comments.
# 2 reminds me of the statement “if it comes in a box, a bog, or a wrapper, avoid it.” Good post.
Thanks Chuck, I hadn’t heard that before. I’ll have to look that up.
Well said!! As for me — I need to work on the “To bed by 10:00 PM action!!
Thanks for commenting, Mom. I think after reading the comments I migt have to expound on why I picked 10:00 as bedtime.
When I lived in central time zone, I had no problem falling asleep by 10:30. Now that I’m on eastern and several favorite shows don’t start until 10:00, I’m pushing myself to stay awake! I’m an “all things in moderation” kind of girl. I don’t deprive myself of anything other than trans fats. But I don’t eat red meat frequently and I avoid caffeine. I’d like to say I avoid fried food, but I’m hit and miss with that goal! ๐ Nice blog.
Shari, even with a DVR all the new shows this Fall are making it hard for me, too! I hope you’ll stick around and comment again. Thanks.
Great list! So practical and easily applicable. I’d say the sleep one is the one I need to work on too. Although my sweet tooth comes in a VERY close second. =)
Debra, I did manage a 10 day sweet fast, but that was all I could handle. I’ve cut back, and only eat certain kinds, but I’m holding on to my sweets for dear life. Thanks for the response.
Simplistic yet doable! Thank you! Sometimes trying to get to sleep within an hour’s time is a challenge!! ๐
Michele, I’m still working on that one. Especially with this new blog on my mind. Thanks for commenting.
